Foreign and domestic tourist arrivals to Tambing Lake in Poso, Central Sulawesi, have increased significantly since security was restored in the haven of radical groups, Lore Lindu National Park head Sudaryatna said as cited by antaranews.com.
'Up to November 2015, 3,000 foreign and domestic tourists have visited the Tambing Lake tourist destination,' Sudaryatna said in Sedoa village, Poso, on Monday.
The number has more than tripled compared with recent years when visitors did not even reach 1,000 people.
According to Sudaryatna, the tourist increase has been noticeable over the last three months. A few months ago, the national park was closed because of security threats in Lore and Poso Pesisir districts.
'Terrorist threats that occurred in Poso made both foreign and domestic tourists reluctant to visit Tambing Lake, which is situated 1,700 meters above sea level,' Sudaryatna continued.
However, tourists have been flocking to Tambing Lake for the past three weeks. Sudaryatna said that on weekends, the number of tourists visiting the national park could reach 200 people.
In the previous week, more than 10 foreign tourists ' from the Netherlands, Denmark and the US ' visited the lake. Most of them were bird enthusiasts or researchers. Aside from the scenic lake, tourists can also discover various bird species living and breeding within the national park and surrounding areas.
'The birds are what attract the tourists to come all the way here,' said Sudaryatna. (nov/dan)(+)
