(Tribun)A policy to introduce automatic electricity-rate adjustments on Dec
A policy to introduce automatic electricity-rate adjustments on Dec. 1 by the government and state-owned electricity firm PLN runs counter to stipulations in the Constitution, says Indonesian Consumer Foundation (YLKI) chairman Tulus Abadi.
Tulus pointed out that electricity was a basic need that according to the Constitution should be governed by the state, not by market mechanism.
In a press release on Monday, Tulus said the main issue of electricity rates was the lack of a primary energy supply as a result of mismanagement, which was unacceptable as consumers had to bear the costs.
"The electricity rate hike that is set to be applied in December is also not timely as people's purchasing power is still low," said Tulus as quoted by kompas.com.
He also questioned the auditor that was authorized to audit the automatic electricity-rate adjustment policy.
"The BPK [Supreme Audit Agency] has to regularly audit the automatic electricity rate so that the rate formulation is transparant and accountable," added Tulus. (kes)(+)
