he Parks and Cemeteries Agency of Bekasi, West Java, has trimmed 720 trees in 12 subdistricts in the city to prevent them from falling down during the peak of the rainy season between November and January.
The agency's secretary, Hudi Wijayanto, said trees has been pruned on, among other roads, Jl. Raya Rawa Tembaga, Jl. KH. Noer Ali, Jl. Ahmad Yani and Jl. Chairil Anwar.
The agency, Hudi said, had initially planned to prune 750 trees this week, but a shortage of field personnel meant the number had been cut by 30.
'We only have 15 personnel in the field, but we plan to trim the remaining 30 trees next week,' he said on Monday as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Trees chosen for pruning were those adjacent to electricity and telephone cables, he said, adding that workers had pruned the trees during off-peak hours so as not to worsen traffic congestion.
According to Hudi, the agency is only authorized to trim trees growing on Bekasi administration land; trees growing on private land are not covered by municipal trimming operations, which cost a total of Rp 165 million (US$11,919).
