inety-seven passengers of the Sea Princess ferry enroute to Singapore from Batam, Riau Islands, were evacuated after the ferry experienced engine failure in the middle of the sea on Sunday evening.
Although the ferry was in Indonesian waters, the incident was reported to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The Batam Port Authority is investigating the case and will submit it to the Shipping Court.
Batam Port Authority head Gajah Rooseno said that his office had requested that the port master and Sea Princess ferry operator explain the chronological events of the incident. 'Based on preliminary information, the ferry had only sailed for around 10 minutes from Batam when the engine stalled in the middle of the sea. After checking, the engine failed because the propellers were caught in ropes. They were then left stranded in the middle of the sea until help arrived,' said Gajah.
