Islands in focus: BOSF set to release orangutans

T

he Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) has announced that it will release four East Kalimantan orangutans into the wild next week.

'€œThe orangutans are around 10 years old. They are from the same class at the orangutan school in Samboja Lestari,'€ said Samboja Lestari BOSF program manager Agus Irwanto on Monday.

The orangutans, Bunga and Teresa (female) and Hanung and Joni (male) will be transported by truck to the southern section of the Kehje Sewen forest, located at the 70-kilometer section of the PT Narkata Rimba logging road in Telen district, East Kutai, on Dec. 5.

'€œThe forest can be reached by road. Earlier, we released orangutans at the northern section of the forest by plane,'€ said Agus.

It takes 12 hours by car to get from Samboja Lestari to Muara Wahau, East Kutai district, located 400 km north of Balikpapan. From Muara Wahau, it takes another three hours to reach Kehje Sewen forest.

As of the end of November this year, BOSF has released 31 orangutans at the Kehje Sewen forest, including those from Central Kalimantan, which were also entrusted at Samboja Lestari and released at the Bukit Batikap forest preserve in Murung Raya regency in Pegunungan Schwanner.
