he Medan District Court sentenced on Monday four drug couriers to 20 years in prison after they were found guilty of transporting a large amount of crystal methamphetamine and ecstasy pills.
Presiding judge Parlindungan Sinaga said the court had also fined the defendants, Abdullah Ibrahim, 38, Sukri Ismail, 38, Zulkifli Muhammad, 35, and Abdul Jabar, 40, Rp 1 billion (US$71,428) each or an additional six months if they were unable pay the fine.
Prosecutors had demanded the court sentence the defendants, who were arrested in May this year, to death.
The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) arrested the defendants and confiscated 21,830 grams of methamphetamine and 1,000 ecstasy pills from them. The four men said that they had received payment of Rp 50 million from someone still at large to transport the drugs to Jakarta.
