U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power says the United States hopes to schedule a U.N. Security Council meeting this month on the "very grim" human rights situation in North Korea.
The United States holds the rotating presidency of the council in December and Power told reporters Tuesday "it's extremely important that the world continue to shine a spotlight as best we can from outside North Korea on the human rights situation inside."
The Security Council discussed North Korea's bleak human rights record for the first time last Dec. 22.
Power cited a number of developments since then including the opening of an office in South Korea by the U.N. human rights agency "and a growing number of testimonies of defectors that offer a more detailed glimpse of life" in the North. (kes)(+)
