he city administration is set to cooperate with state-owned train operator PT KAI to expand Central Jakarta's Gambir train station to accommodate more services.
Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama said that the city administration would permit KAI to expand their station inward toward the National Monument (Monas). However, KAI must also provide space under the elevated road to accommodate street vendors.
Gambir is Jakarta's main station for long-distance travel, such as trips to and from Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Solo, Semarang and Malang.
However, KRL electric trains also pass through Gambir Station in addition to the long-distance trains, causing crowded train traffic and prolonged travel time.
'We have agreed to cooperate with KAI. They will be able to accommodate more passengers and trains. In return, we can provide space for street vendors to do business,' Ahok told reporters on Wednesday afternoon after a meeting at the State-Owned Enterprises Ministry.
