More than 450,000 tweets on regional elections (Pilkada) have been recorded over the past month, with topics varying in accordance with users' origins, according to a recent report from Twitter.
"In Medan, for example, our data shows narcotics as the most talked-about issue. Meanwhile, users in Lampung mostly discussed blackouts," said Twitter's Indonesia partnership manager, Teguh Wicaksono, on the company's official blog on Friday.
Twitter data also showed Surabaya in East Java as the city with the highest number of tweets using the hashtag #Pilkada2015, beating Jakarta, which did not even make the top five. Behind Surabaya, Medan in North Sumatra claimed the second spot, followed by Depok in West Java, Bandar Lampung in Lampung and South Tangerang in Banten.
In terms of most popular candidates, Twitter listed South Tangerang's Airin Rachmi Diany and Benyamin Davnie as the most talked-about pair over the past two weeks.
Previously, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) commissioner Adnan Pandu Praja stated that Airin, who was incumbent South Tangerang mayor, and Banten Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah could be next in line to be charged with graft after Atut's brother Tubagus Chaeri 'Wawan' Wardana, who is also Airin's husband, was named a suspect in a graft case surrounding the procurement of medical equipment in South Tangerang.
Another KPK commissioner, Busyro Muqoddas, said that both Airin and Atut could have played a role in the case, as there was usually more than one actor involved in a graft case, adding they could be named suspects if the KPK garnered enough evidence.
The second to fifth most talked-about candidates, according to Twitter, were Surabaya's Tri Rismaharini and Whisnu Sakti Buana, South Tangerang's H. Arsid and Elvier Ariadiannie Soedarto Poetri, North Sulawesi's Olly Dondokambey and Steven OE Kandouw and Central Kalimantan's Ujang Iskandar and Jawawi, respectively.
Regional elections will be held simultaneously nationwide on Dec. 9. (kes)
