House of Representatives Speaker Setya Novanto attended the reception for the wedding of his daughter Dwina Michaella to Jason F. Harjono, the son of businessman Setiawan Harjono, at the Hotel Mulia in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Friday night.
Setya told tempo.co that he wanted to concentrate on the reception, in response to questions about the House ethics council's ongoing hearing regarding his alleged misuse of the names of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
Kalla reportedly did not attend the reception for several reasons, including a conflict of interest and a gesture of staying objective, according to Vice Presidential spokesman Husain Abdullah.
'Several of Kalla's colleagues have called to say they won't be attending the reception as well, despite being invited. They said they wanted to follow [Kalla's lead],' Husain said on Friday.
Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan was seen attending the event. He reportedly spoke with legislator Effendi M. Simbolon of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) in the Grand Ballroom. Both previously attended the wedding ceremony at the Jakarta Cathedral last Friday.
Security along Jl. Asia-Afrika and Senayan leading to the entrance of the Hotel Mulia was tight on Friday night, with police personnel carefully examining all guests' belongings and vehicles. Inside the Grand Ballroom, where the reception took place, security officers in batik uniforms could be seen in every direction. (kes)
