National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti has reminded his subordinates to closely monitor the movements of radical groups in several areas of Indonesia to guarantee security during the historic simultaneous regional elections on Wednesday.
He specifically ordered Central Sulawesi Police chief Brig. Gen. Idham Azis to pay particular attention to the movements of the nation's most-wanted terrorist, Santoso, who is believed to be hiding in the forest in Poso.
"Stay alert with regards to Santoso [and his group], don't be caught off guard. We must tighten security until the end of December. Keep hunting him and don't lose focus because of the regional elections," he said in a conference call with Idham as reported by news portal kompas.com on Wednesday.
Idham said that the regional elections in Central Sulawesi, including those in Poso, had so far been conducted without disturbance.
The National Police were also monitoring the regional elections and staying in contact with all provincial police chiefs via teleconference from their headquarters in Jakarta, Badrodin added.
This year's simultaneous regional elections of governors, regents and mayors in 269 regions nationwide are a historic first for the nation. The second round of simultaneous regional elections will be held in Feb. 2017.
Coordinating Minister for Politics, Legal and Security Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan also called for tighter security to anticipate any dangers.
"I ask everyone to be vigilant, we don't want any bad things to happen," he said as reported by kompas.com. (rin)
