Google has supported Indonesian mobile application game developers by organizing a number of training programs and events to improve their skills.
'Indonesia has a very strong start-up culture,' said Google Indonesia Developers Products Group Vice President Jason Titus during a developer showcase in Jakarta on Thursday.
According to a recent study conducted by Google, smartphone penetration in Indonesia reached 43 percent as of 2015, with up to 49 percent of people considering their phone as their main device. Meanwhile, the average number of applications installed in each smartphone is 31.
Exploring this potential, Indonesian Google Developer Experts have hosted a series of training programs and have reached almost 3,000 developers. There are also a handful of Android Academies dedicated to mentoring new talent in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Semarang.
Despite the booming app culture in the country, Calvin Kizana, Founder and CEO of Inovedia, the company behind the globally popular app PicMix, said that unfortunately there was still a negative perception that locally made apps were untrustworthy or mediocre, even before people used them.
'When we first launched PicMix, we purposefully kept quiet about our country of origin because we did not want to deter potential users. It was only after having gained 10 million users that we revealed the fact,' said Calvin.
Inovidea was founded in 2012 and their most popular app, PicMix, a collage photo making and sharing app had been installed over 100 million times, added Calvin.
The growth of app development in Indonesia can also be explained by the democratic nature of the app industry; anyone with an idea can develop and launch an app.
Tebak Gambar founder Irwanto Widyarti created a word puzzle game app when he was only 20 years of age and still at university. Now the game has been installed over 7 million times. Meanwhile, husband and wife pair from Central Java, Andi Taru and Idawati, co-founded Educa Studio, a collaborative platform for creating educational games for children that has reached over 15 million users.
