England World Cup winner Banks undergoes cancer treatment In this photo taken Aug. 27, 2015, John Jay Hooker, right, is helped off the table by technician Karen Wood after a CT scan that will reveal whether his cancer treatments are working in Nashville, Tenn. At a legislative hearing this summer for a physician-assisted suicide bill, Hooker spoke from a wheelchair and at times struggled to catch his breath. The following month, at a court hearing on the issue, Hooker was shaky but standing. And afterward he told reporters, “There’s nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come. This idea, the time has come” (AP Photo/David Goldman) (AP Photo/David Goldman)

England's World Cup winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks is undergoing treatment for kidney cancer.

The 77-year-old Banks told the Sunday Mirror newspaper that he is fighting the disease for the second time after losing a kidney to cancer 10 years ago.

Banks is only now disclosing he received the diagnosis last year and there are hopes a kidney could be donated by one of his daughters, should it be a match.

He has been taking chemotherapy medication in a bid to shrink the tumor, in case it could be removed without the need for a transplant.

In the 1970 World Cup, Banks made one of the game's most memorable saves to keep Pele from scoring in a group stage match.

Four years earlier, he was part of the England team that beat West Germany 4-2 in the final. (dan)
