Police in Central Sulawesi have arrested a man for demonstrating against the result of the gubernatorial election on Dec. 9. The police also allegedly manhandled two other protesters.

Fahri Timur, a member of the campaign team of gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidates Rusdi Mastura and Ihwan Datu Adam, was arrested while demonstrating in rejection of the election result announced by the General Elections Commission (KPU) on Friday.

The police also reportedly hit two other protesters, namely Machatir Muhammad Mastura, the son of Rusdi Mastura, and Irfan, a police officer who was Rusdi's guard when he was the mayor of Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi.

Fahri was accused of masterminding the demonstration, which turned chaotic. "He provoked others [to take part in the protest] through Facebook," Palu Police chief Adj. Sr. Com. Basya Radyananda said on Friday.

Meanwhile, the police allegedly got physical with Machatir Muhammad Mastura because he grabbed some barbed wire and threw it at them. "We took action because the protests turned violent," Basya said.

There were only two pairs of candidates for Central Sulawesi governor and deputy governor in the Central Sulawesi regional election.

The initial result showed that Longki Djanggola and Sudarto collected 696,508 votes or 54.31 percent, defeating candidate pair Rusdi Mastura and Ihwan Datu Adam, who obtained 585,890 votes or 45.69 percent. (Afr/bbn)
