Two employees of city-owned bus operator PT TransJakarta were electrocuted when they passed a puddle in Central Jakarta early Wednesday morning.

Employees Niko Adeli, 23, and Siti Nurhayati, 23, were found dead near the TransJakarta bus stop in Manggada Dua, Sawah Besar subdistrict, Central Jakarta.

Sawah Besar Police chief Comr. Ronal Purba said the two employees were electrocuted while heading home after finishing their shift at the bus stop.

"There was a puddle near an electric pole. When the victims got off of the TransJakarta bridge, they walked near it and were killed on the spot," he said as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.

State-electricity company PT PLN spokesman Aries Dwianto said PLN officials went straight to the location after the incident.

From reports, it was found that the cord of a street light had peeled off.

"There was a puddle of water, which is a conductor of electricity, around the peeled off wire that caused the two employees electrocution," he said, adding that the company felt remorse over the deaths, kompas.com reported.

PLN officials isolated the cord and checked other electricity facilities in the area to prevent similar incidents from occurring. (rin)
