There has been a rise in bullying in Indonesian schools this year, according to data from the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI).
KPAI chairman Asrorun Niam Sholeh said on Wednesday that according to the commission's data, there were 79 cases of students acting as bullies and 103 cases of students involved in brawls this year.
Asrosun told kompas.com that the number constituted an increase from last year's data, which recorded 67 bullying cases and 46 student brawls.
Asrorun cited the absence of good role models for students as a prime cause for the rise.
Inappropriate shows on television and violent video games also produced a rise in the number of school bullies.
'Children tend to imitate. They learn from TV shows and games that show violence, pornography and other negative things,' he told kompas.com.
Asrorun urged the government and those involved in online gaming to be more serious in dealing with the negative influences derived from such games. (cal/rin)
