Anyone can build an online business as long as they utilize their talents in a creative way and carefully gauge the wants and needs of consumers.

In his new book, creative consultant Yoris Sebastian, decodes the success of actress Dian Sastrowardoyo and her friends in running their catering business.

Titled 5W1H: Kisah Dian Sastrowardoyo dan Onlinepreneur Lainnya (5W1H: The Stories of Dian Sastrowardoyo and Other Onlinepreneurs), the book also includes four other entrepreneurs who have been successful in marketing their products online.

They come from diverse backgrounds, from a noted animator in Jakarta to a salesperson in Semarang, Central Java.

“This book shows that our main asset to start a business is creativity and not money,” said Yoris, the founder of OMG Creative Consulting who served as Hard Rock Café Jakarta general manager at the age of 26, during the book launch in Jakarta recently.

Through concise explanations and playful sketches, 5W1H invites readers to learn from the five entrepreneurs and to answer five crucial questions that will assist readers in planning their own online business strategy.

Readers can jot down their ideas on the book’s blank note section and have fun coloring the book’s cover, which Yoris described as his way to provide antistress coloring therapy.

Dian and her friends run 3 Skinny Minnies healthy catering, which she proudly says is the most expensive catering in Greater Jakarta.

Despite the hefty price tag, 3 Skinny Minnies has succeeded in garnering 100 customers, thanks to its’ delicious, weight-loss recipes and Dian’s online marketing strategy.

After giving birth to her second child in 2013, Dian has been committed to getting her body back in shape. Dian, along with her friends Tana Suwardhono, Reina Wardhana and Jessica Halim, tried a number of diet catering packages that failed to tickle their taste buds.

“Most of the catering packages indeed helped us lose some weight, but the taste was not as good as I had expected,” Dian said about their motivation to open 3 Skinny Minnies in 2014.

Using their own recipes, Tana, Reina and Jessica cook a wide array of gourmet dishes, from Vietnamese pho noodle soup, Korean gyutan don rice dish to Mexican fritata, which are prepared in controlled calorie portions and are low in sodium.

They have developed various packages to cater to different customers, from a diet package for men called Lean Mean Boy Friend, Bride-To-Be package to Breast-feeding and Maternity packages. Prices range from Rp 1 (US$72.43) to Rp 1.75 million for a five-day package.

“We are confident about the not-so-competitive price because we use premium ingredients,” Dian explained.

Dian, who is in charge of promotion, introduces 3 Skinny Minnies to her friends through WhatsaApp and Path, and also to her 2.8 million followers in Instagram.

She also loves to posts selfies with 3 Skinny Minnies meals along with a brief description of every meal.

“The rule is to never tag your Path friends in your promotional posts because it is annoying and perhaps prompts them to mute your Path moments,” she said.

The company caters to between 90 and 120 customers every week and recently launched its own diet sauces.

“We also launched our YouTube channel, where we give healthy cooking tutorials,” Dian said.

But what if you’re not famous and don’t have millions of Instagram followers like Dian? Yoris introduces readers to Fahma Mahardini, a young woman from Semarang who left her fulltime job as a store salesperson after achieving success with her Wi Ka Flanel Souvenir.

Fahma turned her crafting hobby into a business by opening Wi Ka Souvenir store on online marketplace Tokopedia in 2013. Two years later, Fahma resigned from her sales job as her souvenir business provides her more income and freedom.

The book also shares online marketing tips and tricks from Agnes Tandia, the founder of Bandung-based shoe line Kulkith. She utilizes Kulkith'€™s website and marketplace Zalora to market her signature batik and traditional woven cloth shoes in Indonesia and Malaysia.

To gain netizens'€™ attention, Agnes releases new design every month and hires online influencers '€” who are under the age of 25 and have over 3,000 likes on their social media accounts '€” to endorse her products.

The book also includes the story of Wahyu Aditya, the founder of animation school Hello Motion who also founded youthful Indonesia-themed clothing line Distro KDRI; and also Carline Darjanto and Ria Sarwono of Cotton Ink clothing and accessories.
