AKARTA: Two teenage girls were hit by a train when crossing the tracks on a motorcycle using an illegal path made by residents in South Tambun, Bekasi, West Java, on Thursday night, according to the Bekasi Police.
Bekasi Police spokesman Insp. Makmur said that the two secondary school girls, both of whom were 13 years old, had been on the path to cross when their motorcycle stuck in the middle of the tracks as a speeding train heading for Malang, East Java, struck them, killing them both instantly.
'They died [instantly] from severe injuries,' he said, adding that the pair had been thrown 10 meters from the impact site. The two girls were residents of the Papan Mas housing complex in South Tambun, Makmur said.
An eyewitness, Rustami, said that she had tried to prevent the two girls from crossing the track, citing an incoming train, but they ignored her. She added that the two had both suffered serious head injuries.
Makmur said the Tambun subprecinct police immediately sent investigators to the scene after receiving a report about the incident, adding that they had also sent the bodies to the Bekasi District Hospital for an autopsy right after they had confirmed the identity of the two girls.
'The bodies have been buried,' he added, as quoted by tempo.co.
