EMARANG: As many as 54 people from different regions across Central Java have been reported missing by their respective families and are feared to be linked to the Fajar Nusantara Movement (Gafatar), a police official has said.
Central Java Police Chief Insp. Gen. Nur Ali said that the figure was based on reports filed from across the province. He said the police would continue to investigate Gafatar's existence in cooperation with regional administrations.
'If a family reports members missing, we will try to look for them,' Nur said in Semarang on Friday.
Gafatar was brought into the spotlight after the disappearance of physician Rica Tri Handayani and her child from Yogyakarta on Dec. 30. Following the disappearances, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) made an announcement that Gafatar was, in fact, an incarnation of Al-Qiyadah Al-Islamiyah, a syncretic sect synthesizing the Koran, Bible and Torah.
