Victories for Menara CC, Chairos Tigers in JCA League

A

clinical batting performance by Menara CC while chasing a stiff target helped it defeat GMIS in its own backyard by four wickets, in a division 1 encounter on Saturday, in the TATA Motors JCA League over the weekend.

Chasing a target of 247 runs to win, on a ground that has had an impressive makeover, Menara CC romped home in the 33rd over losing only six wickets.

Menara did not get the start it needed after losing its openers. But then a fine partnership of 132 runs for the fourth wicket between John Dulip Kumar (71 runs off 46 balls) and Neetesh Pansare (58 runs off 64 balls) steadied the innings.

This match winning partnership that came in quick time was complimented by a superb flourish in the end between Skipper Harish Tiwari and Mohit Keshwani. Between the two of them, 47 runs were added in only four overs to finish the game with two overs to spare.

GMIS, which lost the services of its strike bowler Diwakar Mohan to a freak injury on the field in the very first over, did not find the support it needed from the rest of its bowlers who, barring the exception of Jalaj Chaturvedi (2/35) were all taken for runs. Karan Tiwari and Maulik Trivedi also took two wickets apiece.

Earlier put into bat, GMIS started cautiously when it reached 64/1 in 12 overs. The next 12 overs saw them accelerate to 169/3, despite losing its big hitting batsman and captain, Naresh Gupta, who was bowled by his counterpart Harish Tiwari.

A splendid inning from its batting mainstay Pratyush Chaturvedi, who missed out on a well-deserved century by just 10 runs, held the batting together. In an attempt to up the ante, Pratyush got caught in the deep off the bowling of Taimur Khan in the 26th over. Taimur (3/44) and Mohit Keshwani (4/49) were able to choke GMIS'€™ batting with intelligent bowling in the slog overs to have them all out for 246 runs. Bharat Dholakhandi was the other contributor with the bat scoring 33 runs.

John Dulip and Mohit shared the Man of the Match award.

Meanwhile on Sunday, at the same venue, in a division 2 game, the all Indonesian Chairos Tigers defeated Ceylon CC by 16 runs. Batting first the Tigers scored 235/3 in its 35 overs. Gemma Fajar remained unbeaten on 88 runs (off just 77 balls) along with veteran Sachin Gopalan (58* off 44 balls).

Chasing 236 runs to win, Ceylon, riding on a fine 60 runs by Dihan Silva, was sitting pretty on 106/3 at the first drinks break. A fine comeback then by the Chairos bowlers led by Yoko (3/33) and Gemma (2/29) had Ceylon all out for 219 runs in the 28th over. Rajeev Kumar scored 27 runs for Ceylon, while Gemma, for his all-round performance was declared the Man of the Match.

In another division two fixture at Cibubur grounds, the Metro Indians defeated Challengers CC by 54 runs.

In a low-scoring game, the Metro Indians were all out for 157 runs in the 31st over. Kiruba Sankar was his usual consistent self, scoring 66 runs while Sakthi Narayanan contributed 18 runs. For the Challengers, Satinder Minhas took 4/24 while Manickavasagan took 2/36. In response, the Challengers were never in the game as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals to be all-out for a paltry 103 runs. Santhosh Kumar was the lone man standing with an unbeaten 40 runs.

Kiruba Shankar, this time with the ball in hand returned with fine figures of 4/12, while Suresh Chidambaram supported with 3/31. Kiruba was declared the Man of the Match.
