Six people have been arrested following an attack against the police carried out by local residents during a raid on a house allegedly owned by a drug dealer in East Jakarta, which claimed the lives of one police officer and one police informant on Monday.

Two of the people have been named as suspected drug dealers, while the other four were believed to have used crystal amphetamine, Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Muhamamd Iqbal said on Wednesday.

The police suspected that more than 10 dealers were operating in an area known as Kampung Berlan, which has long been known as a drug trafficking spot.

Iqbal said the police were continuing to hunt for other attackers, who allegedly caused the death of Chief Brig. Taufik and a police informant known as J. Also during the incident, the Senen Police'€™s narcotics division head First Insp. Haryadi Prabowo, who led the operation, suffered a stab wound.

'€œWe will arrest and prosecute all of the attackers," Iqbal added.

The incident started when five police officers raided a house on Jl. Slamet Riyadi in Matraman, East Jakarta, on Monday evening.

During the arrests, a drug suspect and her child reportedly shouted out to other people, which was followed by the attacks against the police officers, said the Jakarta Police'€™s general crimes chief Sr. Comr. Krishna Murti.

A group far outnumbering the police officers, including many people armed with sharp weapons, then attacked the police. According to Iqbal, many of the attackers may have been under the influence of drugs at the time.

Taufik died after jumping into the Ciliwung River together with three other people, after armed residents cornered them on the riverbank, Krishna said. The bodies of Taufik and the informant were found on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Police'€™s health division head Sr. Comr. Musyafak said that based on autopsy results, Taufik was injured before he jumped into the river. He said Taufik appeared to have been hit with blunt objects on several parts of his body.

'€œAlso, there was a wound on his left leg,'€ Musyafak said, while confirming that Taufik ultimately died from drowning. (bbn)(+)
