ix students from Sogang University in South Korea recently visited Indonesia for a volunteer program. The students were Jeenho Mok, Dongbin Cho, Doosik Bae, Ji Hyun-hong, Hyun Sung-seo and Hee Jung-choi. Their degree programs include sociology, business, French culture and engineering.
The program they joined was a pilot project for an upcoming four-year partnership between Sogang University and Sanata Dharma University with the support of the South Korean government. The focus of the program is community service, and the students visited places where volunteers work for the betterment of society and the environment, such as Pingit village and the Kuning River.
Nine days in a very high temperature while in their original country it was minus 10 C degrees was not easy at all. Four of them even got sick on the fourth day.
However, their spirit and enthusiasm remained outstanding. They followed the schedule set for them in both observation and fieldwork. They were also active and cooperative, and took necessary notes on all activities.
Besides the observation and fieldwork activities, the students were also introduced to Indonesian culture, especially Javanese culture, as the program was based in Yogyakarta. While time was short, it is hoped that the students learned something from their nine days in Yogyakarta.
As members of a future generation, it is hoped that they will be sensitive and always do good for the betterment of society and the environment.
