he local election organizer in Simalungun, North Sumatra, said on Monday that the regency was ready to hold a regional election as scheduled on Wednesday, as election supplies had reached most parts of the regency.
'As of [Monday] afternoon, we have delivered election supplies to 15 of 31 districts in the regency. The remaining 16 districts will receive supplies by the end of the day,' Simalungun General Elections Commission (KPUD) head Adelbert Damanik said.
Elections were initially scheduled to be held in Simalungun at the same time as 268 local elections on Dec. 9 last year, but were held up by legal disputes regarding the nomination of one candidate pair.
The upcoming election will be contested by five tickets.
Adelbert said 600,000 people had been registered as voters for the election.
'The local administration, meanwhile, has allocated Rp 10.7 billion [US$781,000] from the regional budget to finance the election,' he added.
In an effort to promote efficiency, the government scheduled simultaneous local elections on Wednesday in 269 provinces, regencies and municipalities, which is half of the total number in the country. The General Elections Commission (KPU), however, decided to postpone elections in five regions, including Simalungun, over administrative issues.
