etailer PT Hero Supermarket, which owns the Swedish furniture franchise IKEA in Indonesia, said they would continue to use the brand name despite a recent court ruling stipulating the loss of its right to use the trademark in the Indonesian market.
The retailer said in a statement on Sunday that its store in Alam Sutra, Tangerang, Banten, would remain open as normal and sell the entire range of IKEA products.
'Despite the Supreme Court's decision, Inter IKEA Systems BV has provided for continued ownership of the IKEA trademark rights in Indonesia,' it said referring to the Swedish furniture giant.
It did not elaborate further on what action it might take following the court ruling. Inter IKEA Systems BV has reportedly registered the 'IKEA' trademark with the Indonesian directorate-general of intellectual property twice, in 2006 and 2010.
However, a local furniture firm PT Ratania Khatulistiwa argued at the Jakarta Commercial Court that the Swedish firm had not used its trademark for commercial purposes for three consecutive years. In 2014, the court granted the rights to use the 'Ikea' brand name to Ratania.
IKEA filed an appeal to the Supreme Court, which was rejected last year, according to court documents uploaded to its website last week.
