he Jakarta administration is set to evict low-cost apartment (rusunawa) residents who own private cars, according to a city official.
Housing and Government Buildings Agency head Ika Lestari Aji said that a rusunawa, according to Gubernatorial Regulation No. 111/2014 on low-cost rental apartment occupancy, is intended for lower-income residents with limited purchasing power. Cars can be seen parked in the lots of several rusunawa, such as Marunda in North Jakarta.
'If a rusunawa resident owns a car, it means that the rusunawa is no longer used in accordance with its initial function. Therefore, the tenant who owns the car will no longer be permitted to live in the rusunawa,' Ika told reporters at City Hall on Tuesday.
Separately, Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama similarly said that a rusunawa is designated for families with a monthly household income of Rp 5 million or less. Those who are able to afford a car, he said, are not categorized as low-income residents.
'I doubt you can afford a car with a household income of Rp 5 million [US$368.95] or less. If you can afford a car then you must at least be a middle class resident. Therefore, we will raid all our rusunawa and kick out those who own cars,' Ahok said.
