he Mentawai Islands regency administration is to build 398 permanent homes for those displaced by a tsunami in the Mentawai Islands in October 2010.
The additional housing project has received allocations in the 2016 regency budget at Rp 20 million (US$1,481) per house.
Mentawai Islands Regent Rijel Samaloisa said the additional homes were for those not included on a list of recipients of 2,072 houses built by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) since 2011.
'We acknowledge the limited duration and inaccurate inventory as a result of irregular conditions. Some of the families moved away from their villages after the tsunami so they were not listed, while some of the names are merged, as many Mentawai people have the same names,' Rijel told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
According to Rijel, Mentawai residents have been suffering and displaced for more than five years, and cannot wait any longer.
'The quickest way to help them is through allocation of funds from the regency budget,' said Rijel.
