he Palu chapter of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has voiced concerns over radical teachings spread by preachers after receiving reports that one preacher had praised the Islamic State (IS) group.
Palu MUI head Zainal Abidin Ishak said the organization would immediately implement an official certification process for local clerics.
Preacher certification, he added, aimed to ensure that preachers were spreading appropriate messages and not inciting radicalism among congregations.
'Islam spreads affection to the universe. It does not propagate radicalism,' said Zainal, who is also rector of the Palu State Islamic Institute (IAIN).
When reached on Tuesday, the Central Sulawesi Religious Affairs Agency's Muslim community guidance division head, Nasruddin L. Midu, said the preacher certification process was fraught with difficulties given the varying educational backgrounds and competencies of preachers.
