The House of Representatives'€™ ethics council will investigate the assault case involving lawmaker Masinton Pasaribu after coordinating with the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim), a council deputy chairman said on Thursday.

The council conducted an internal meeting on Thursday to decide whether or not to probe Masinton's alleged crime of assault, the council's deputy chairman Junimart Girsang said.

"We have decided that we will conduct an investigation following a report submitted by Dita's lawyer," he told journalists at the House complex on Thursday.

Dita Aditia worked as a staffmember to Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) lawmaker Masinton. She and her lawyer reported her boss to Bareskrim late last month after Masinton allegedly punched her in the face in a car in late January.

She also reported the alleged misconduct to the ethics council on Feb. 2.

The council will coordinate with the National Police regarding Dita's report.

"We just need to find time to meet with Bareskrim [investigators]. We haven't set a date yet," Junimart said.

Police investigators questioned Dita on Feb. 4.

Dita also visited with the Legal Aid Foundation of Indonesian Women's Association for Justice and the National Commission on Violence against Women earlier this month to seek support.

Masinton, who serves on House Commission III overseeing legal affairs, has denied the allegations. He claims that the bruise on Dita's face was unintentionally caused by his driver.

Masinton'€™s claim contradicts Dita's statement, which cites that the two were alone together in Masinton'€™s car.

Masinton has not been seen at the House complex since the case emerged. (rin)(+)
