Islands in focus: Two dead in campus bus accident

T

wo people died and dozens of others were injured on Friday evening after a campus bus carrying students of Andalas University (Unand) in Padang, West Sumatra, slipped off the road and hit a house near the main entrance to the state university.

The incident killed 58-year-old Asril Zaini, the bus driver, and 20-year-old Husniawati Dewi, a student at the university'€™s School of Industrial Technology. At least 40 people, most of them Unand students, needed treatment in three local hospitals for their injuries.

Unand'€™s deputy rector for student affairs, Hermansyah, said the university would cover all medical costs of the victims. '€œWe are very sorry for the incident,'€ he said on Saturday.

Witnesses said the ill-fated bus experienced brake problems seconds before the crash, forcing the driver to swerve the bus to the left and hit a house.
