The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry sunk on Monday an Antarctic toothfish fishing vessel, wanted by Interpol for alleged illegal fishing in areas across the world. The vessel was sunk in waters off Pangandaran Beach, West Java.
'Today, we are here to witness the realization of the Indonesian government's commitment to transforming Indonesia into a global maritime axis,' Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said after the sinking of the 1,322 gross tonnage vessel.
The minister said the vessel was stateless and had long fished illegally.
Your comments:
The sunken vessel could help breed fish if it was destroyed in the right spot. This is happening all over the world. With the increase of fishing activities in Indonesian waters, the amount of fish in the sea will reduce dramatically.

The reason why the vessels aren't confiscated and refurbished is because the government would be accused of piracy if it did such a thing. Also, if the vessels aren't destroyed there is a chance that the owners will buy them back.

Australia and New Zealand last year caught and arrested three similar fishing vessels in their waters.

I wonder whether all the hazardous material has been removed from the sea.

Why aren't arrested fishing vessels like this confiscated, refurbished and given to local fishermen?
