he Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has revealed that there has been a significant increase in the amount of illegal drugs discovered in recent times.
BPOM head Roy Sparringa said that in 2013, the BPOM had found 71 lots of illegal drugs worth a total of Rp 5.67 billion (US$429,057), while in 2014, the agency confiscated 3,656 lots of illegal drugs worth a total of Rp 31.6 billion.
In 2015, the agency saw a slight decrease in the value of contraband it seized. That year, the agency confiscated 3,671 items of illegal drugs worth Rp 20.8 billion. Meanwhile, the amount and volume of counterfeit drugs found in the Indonesian market soared to 4,441 lots worth a total of Rp 49.8 billion from February to March this year alone.
“It is either that we are getting better at discovering the bootlegged drugs, or that the illegal drug business is flourishing,” Roy said at the BPOM’s offices in Central Jakarta on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.
