he Golkar Party central executive board is set to discuss a controversial party policy that would collect billions of rupiah from chairman candidates.
The party's executive board will hold a plenary meeting on Thursday to debate a recommendation proposed by the steering committee (SC) for the collection of Rp 5 billion (US$379,000) to Rp 10 billion from each member running for the party’s chairmanship.
The plenary meeting, headed by Aburizal Bakrie, will also discuss the Extraordinary National Congress to be held next month.
The meeting will take place under the management of the Bali congress that was recently made official by Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly.
Aburizal will be accompanied by a representative from the Ancol congress, which merged with the Bali congress.
"The plenary meeting will be held to ratify the performance of the SC. The SC has already prepared all the material," said congress SC chair Nurdin Halid on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.
The politician said the recommendation from the SC could still change depending on a finalized agreement at the meeting.
"The SC only delivers planning advice, so it can still be changed in the plenary meeting," Nurdin said.
Nurdin also confirmed that the congress would be held on May 23 in Bali.
He said the Law and Human Rights Ministry had already released a decree for the congress, and President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo would also attend.
"The fixed date is May 23 and the location is Nusa Dua," he said.
As previously reported, the proposed donation is designed to serve as a “fence” to prevent chairman candidates from engaging in money politics.
Nurdin said this requirement would be applied strictly to all would-be chairman candidates once they had passed the verification process. (liz/bbn)
