P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry to complete its study on the evaluation, review and redesign of the Hambalang Sports Complex project by early next year, when the government plans to relaunch the scandal-hit project.

"The president asked that the final audit be finalized in April or May 2017, including [studies on] the project’s function and redesign. All other aspects, including the legal aspects, should also be completed,” Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung told reporters at the State Palace on Monday.

The use of the complex will be determined after technical studies are completed, Pramono added.

During a limited meeting on the Hambalang project, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, accompanied by a technical audit team, presented the audit results, relating to the construction, geological and geo-technical aspects, as well as waterways and drainage systems.

Basuki said the audit team had subsequently recommended that the construction of the complex proceed.

Meanwhile, West Java Deputy Governor Deddy Mizwar expressed support for the continuation of the Hambalang project, whether as a sports facility or for other functions.

"If it is not possible [as a sports facility], then it could be for other purposes, for instance, it could be a hospital," Deddy said.

In his visit to the Hambalang site on May 18, President Jokowi urged the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry to conduct a thorough check of the conditions of the buildings at the complex to find a way to recoup the state assets.

Construction, which began in 2010, was halted in 2013 after a corruption scandal emerged; former youth and sports minister Andi Mallarangeng and former Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum are among those who have been found guilty in the case. (dmr)
