oll road operators are upbeat about improved traffic congestion and trip durations from Jakarta to East Brebes in Central Java, following the implementation of an integrated payment system.
State-owned toll road operator Jasa Marga's president director Adityawarman said trips from Jakarta to East Brebes would take a mere four hours compared to the 10 hours needed to travel a shorter distance – from Jakarta to Palimanan, West Java – during the holiday season last year.
"We believe it will cut travel time to four hours," he said on Wednesday.
The Public Works and Public Housing Ministry ordered an integrated payment system for the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road, covering Cikopo-Palimanan in West Java as an initial cluster, and Palimanan to Pemalang in Central Java as the second cluster.
The measure was taken in anticipation of the Idul Fitri holiday in July.
The first cluster is currently run by two different toll road operators, namely Jasa Marga and infrastructure firm Lintas Marga Sedaya (LMS), requiring road users to pay at several toll gates and causing traffic.
In the first cluster, the integrated system will eliminate the need to pay at the Cikopo toll gate, so vehicles simply need to take a ticket at the Cikarang Utama toll road gate in Cikampek and pay in Palimanan. Last year, queues at the Cikopo toll gate caused severe gridlock across the area.
The tolls are reported to reach Rp 109,500 (US$8.27). The system will be ready on June 13. (dmr)
