ogyakarta’s deputy governor KGPAA Paku Alam X has been awarded the title of pencak silat warrior of the Perisai Diri martial arts school by Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, who is also a pencak silat warrior, at the Yogyakarta sultanate palace on Saturday.

The sultan also awarded retired air force marshal Ras Rendro Bowo Sukmono the title of warrior of the traditional martial art.

Sultan Hamengkubuwono explained that the martial art was developed by one of the sultanate families, RM Soebandiman Dirdjoatmodjo.

“Pak Dirdjo mastered the martial art from the age of 9 and was personally asked to teach the martial art at Taman Siswa school by its founder Ki Hajar Dewantara,” he said.

The Perisai Diri martial art school, which was founded in 1955, is among the ten legendary schools involved in the birth of the Indonesian Martial Arts Association. Right now, there are at least 800 martial arts schools across the archipelago with the Perisai Diri martial art school among those that have been successfully expanding abroad. The school has already established branches in countries such as Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, Iran, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain and Belgium.
