Islands focus: Concert to boost nationalism at border areas

T

he government has initiated a series of music concerts as a tactic to boost nationalism among border area residents, and thus speed up its development projects.

On Tuesday, Jakarta-based rock band Slank performed in Atambua, Belu regency, located at the Timor Leste border.

“This red and white concert is an effort to boost spirit and to speed up regional development,” Villages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Minister Marwan Jafar said in a statement on Tuesday.

The minister said that it was priority of the President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration to speed up development in border areas.

The concert in Atambua was the second Slank concert facilitated by the ministry as part of its border area campaign, after an earlier concert in Singkawang, West Kalimantan on May 15. The ministry decided to work with Slank, whom boast a sizeable fanbase, due to the band’s strong anti drug, anti-terrorism and anti-human trafficking stance.
