eople living in northern Jakarta have been advised to anticipate possible flooding this week, caused by a six-monthly high tide cycle.
This week is the peak of cycle, Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency head Denny Wahyudi said on Monday.
The areas potentially at risk include Marunda, Muara Angke, Muara Baru, Ancol, Pluit and Penjaringan, Denny said.
He said, however, that areas near Ancol and Pluit would be less affected by flooding because a dam had already been constructed and pump houses were ready to operate.
According to a monitoring meter in Pasar Ikan, the sea level had reached 247 centimeters, two centimeters higher than the previous day, said Denny. He said the level could rise further if high water was accompanied by strong winds.
“The meter recorded the water level at 247 centimeters. At that time, there was no strong wind, but if there was strong wind, it could be higher,” Denny said as quoted by kompas.com.
The collapse of a dam in Pantai Mutiara on Saturday resulted from a combination of high waves and strong wind. Flooding inundated 124 houses in nearby areas. (bbn)
