he Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry has been blasted by the House of Representatives for performing poorly in the first half of the year.

Maman Imanulhaq, a National Awakening Party (PKB) lawmaker, criticized the ministry's lack of focus in setting program priorities and urged the ministry to meet its responsibilities as a coordinating body, since it was not meant to be technical in nature.

"Very limited funds and too many programs is counterproductive," the lawmaker said during a hearing between the House and the ministry on Monday, adding that the ministry must focus on its duties in making analysis and organize discussions on its grand design of strategies within its field.

During a budget hearing with House Commission VIII, which oversees religious and social affairs, lawmakers said the ministry had not maximized its allocated budget for 2016 as it had used less than 6 percent of it as of May.

Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohana Yembise said the ministry had used Rp 39 billion of the Rp 769 billion allocated for 2016.

Commission deputy chairperson Iskan Qolba Lubis, a Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) lawmaker, said the ministry should fully avail of its budget to optimize its performance. (dan)
