Indonesian archery secures a ticket to Rio

ndonesia is creating its own opportunities for the upcoming summer Olympics with its men’s recurve archery team recently qualifying for the Rio de Janeiro Games.

With the new addition, Indonesia has now secured spots for 25 athletes at the Games, encompassing the sports of badminton (10 qualifiers), weightlifting (7), rowing (2), archery (4), BMX (1) and track and field (1) — progress from the total of 23 spots secured at the 2012 London Olympics.

Muhammad Hanif and Hendra Wijaya are the soon-to-be Olympians, earning their way into the prestigious multi-sport event after performing solidly to dominate France 6-0 in the final of an Olympics qualification event at Antalya Archery Club in Turkey on Sunday.

In previous rounds at Antalya, the duo defeated Finland 6-2 in qualifying rounds, outclassed Russia 5-3 in the quarterfinals and ousted Malaysia 6-0 in the semifinals.

Unfortunately, the Indonesia’s women’s team — made up of Eka Yulia Rachmawati, Titiek Kusumawardhani, Choirunissa and Erwina Safitri — failed to follow the men’s duo’s supremacy in Turkey.

The newly earned ticket to the Olympics adds to the Indonesian archery presence at the Games as Ika Yuliana Rochmawati in the women’s singles and Ega Agata Salsabilla in the men’s singles have already secured their spots.

“[Earning another Olympics ticket] makes us all proud, because it also means we fulfilled our own target [for the Rio Games],” said Alman Hudry, secretary-general to the Indonesian Archery Association (Perpani), in a statement.

“We hope the good start can lead us to winning a medal for Indonesia,” he added.

Kelana, strength and conditioning manager for the country’s Satlak Prima elite athlete program, hopes the good vibes will also extend to beach volleyball, swimming and track and field, national teams for which are still chasing Olympics tickets through several qualifying events in the less-than-two-months remaining before the Games.

Indonesia has a single past glory in Olympic archery, when Lilies Handayani, Nurfitriyana Saiman and Kusuma Wardhani won a silver medal in the women’s team competition at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in South Korea.

Having representatives in three categories at the Rio Games gives Indonesia a better chance of stealing a medal from archery giants South Korea and the US, which have won 19 and 14 gold medals in the summer Olympics, respectively.
