akarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama will authorize the use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to help traffic police and city transportation agency officers monitor the odd-even traffic policy, which will be implemented in July.

Ahok said only a small number of personnel would be required to implement the policy - replacing the three-in-one policy, which mandated that a car had to contain at least three passengers to use certain business district roads during certain hours.

“It will be easy to monitor [the implementation of the policy] because we will have CCTVs. Should you change the license plate on the road, officers will find out. If your plate doesn’t fit your vehicle documents, officers will know it and you will be charged with document forgery,” Ahok said at City Hall on Monday.

Jakarta will disseminate information about the policy, is expected to help ease traffic congestion in the capital, from June 28 to July 19. The trial period will run from July 20 to Aug. 20 and the policy will officially kick off on Aug. 23.

The odd-even plate policy will be implemented until the city administration is able to install the electronic road pricing (ERP) next year. The odd-even policy will be effective on the formerly three-in-one zone including Jl. Sudirman, Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Gatot Subroto from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Budiyanto, head of law enforcement at the Jakarta Police traffic unit said on Sunday that the police would support the administration implement the policy. (yan)
