adjadjaran University (Unpad) is apparently the most desired university in the country, with 93,046 high school graduates having applied through the Joint Written University Entrance Test (SBMPTN) to the West Java university this year.

It has been recorded that 47,119 high school graduates applied for the university’s science and technology studies and another 45,927 applied for social and humanities studies.

“Of those figures, only 1,847 high school graduates, about 3.92 percent of those who applied, will be accepted for science and technology studies, while 1,709, about 3.72 percent, will be accepted for social and humanities studies. In total, Unpad will accept 3,552 high school graduates,” Unpad spokesman Soni Nurhakim told a media conference in Bandung, West Java, on Tuesday.

The most desired courses in Unpad’s science and technology studies were medicine with 8,625 people applying for 140 places, information engineering with 3,328 applying for 46 places, pharmacy with 3,221 applying for 88 places, psychology with 3,068 applying for 95 places and dentistry with 2,580 applying for 96 places.

For social and humanities studies; 4,853 students applied for 270 places studying law, 4,464 applied for 78 places to study communications, 3,962 applied for 73 management places, 3,083 applied for 64 accountancy places and 2,564 applied for 65 international relations places.

Meanwhile, Asep Gana Suganda, SBMPTN 2016 secretary for West Java, said another West Java higher learning institution, the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), had accepted 1,678 out of the 30,739 high school graduates who applied.

“The degree of acceptance at ITB is 5.45 percent, or a ratio of one out of every 18 applicants,” Asep, who is also a professor at ITB’s School of Pharmacy said.

Based on the 2016 SBMPTN results, Asep said, the two applicants with the highest scores were accepted into ITB’s School of Electronic Engineering and Informatics and Industrial Engineering.
