he government will allow secondary cut beef import licenses to be more widely accessible following industry complaints regarding the government’s earlier policy to only grant permission for ten merchants to buy 23,200 secondary cuts from abroad.
“We will change the minister’s act regarding the import, hopefully, we can sign it today. We plan to open licenses for secondary cuts and innards, as long as these imports are free from foot and mouth disease (FMD),” Agriculture Minister Amram Sulaiman said on Tuesday at the ministry after holding a meeting with importers. Until recently, the government had been the only party with a license.
Ninety percent of secondary cut imports will be distributed in the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) area, Amran added.
“We will assess need first, and give licenses based on that,” he said. (dan)
