T

he state-run Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung, West Java, has assigned a team of 13 doctors to take care of 10-year-old Arya Permana, who suffers from obesity weighing 190 kilograms.

The team of doctors comprised specialized pediatricians, including a nutritionist, an endocrinologist, a rehabilitation specialist, a pediatric surgeon, a radiologist, a pathologist and a child psychiatrist, the hospital's medicine and treatment director Nucki Nursjamsi Hidayat said on Monday, as reported by the Antara news agency.

Arya, who comes from Cipurwasari village in Karawang regency, was admitted to the hospital on Monday to receive treatment for his obesity. The fourth-grader was accompanied by his parents, Karawang regent Celiica Nurrachdiana and West Java Health Office head Alma Lucyati.

The doctors would check thoroughly for the root cause of his obesity, with the maximum healthy weight for a child of his age and size being 50 kilograms, Nucky said, adding that they would also devise a special diet for Arya to reach the ideal weight.

Meanwhile, the leader of the team, Julistyo TB, said a check-up on Arya conducted on July 2 found him to be in a healthy condition. The physical and laboratory examinations showed no complications in his heart and lungs, with the fat piling up mostly under his skin.

"The case is pretty dangerous for a child of his age if it is not treated well. Obesity is basically [caused by] an imbalance in energy usage," Julistyo said, as quoted by Antara, adding that Arya's parents had brought him to the hospital before as his weight was increasing. (rin)
