‘Only God and President know’ about Cabinet reshuffle

A

mid rising speculation that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will reshuffle his Cabinet, he summoned several ministers to the Presidential Palace on Thursday. A day earlier the President also met with several ministers and the founder of the NasDem Party Surya Paloh.

The President also chaired a special meeting to finalize the promotion of several government officials into the first echelon, the highest level for civil servants.

Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution, Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Agrarian and Spatial Planning Minister Ferry Baldan and Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Yuddy Chrisnandi were among the President’s guests.

None of the President’s guests talked to the media about the Cabinet reshuffle. Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung told reporters to ask the President directly about the Cabinet changes.

Yuddy suggested that the Cabinet reshufle plan was so secretive, no one really had a clue. “Regarding when the reshuffle will take place, only God and the President know about it,” said Yuddy as quoted by tempo.co.

Yuddi, a politican from the Hanura Party, was widely criticized for using his official car to return home during the Idul Fitri holidays last week, despite his ban on civil servants using their official cars for private purposes.

Darmin acknowledged he had met with the President, but he quickly added that they had only discussed food-price control, irrigration development and land procurement for sugar production.

“The President gave us three months to completely overcome the problems, Darmin told reporters after the meeting on Wednesday. On Thursday the President summoned him again.

Pramono told reporters to ask the President directly about the Cabinet changes on Wednesday. One day later, however, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician played down the possibility of a Cabinet change.

“The President can summon ministers anytime. It’s up to him,” Pramono said.

Pramono pointed out that the President had chaired a meeting so that he could have the final say on the promotion of 20 first-echelon officials.

When Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi came to the palace, journalists expected her to brief the President and then talk to the media about the ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration on the South China Sea. However, she did not touch on the issue when speaking to reporters.

Jokowi reportedly plans to replace some of his Cabinet ministers to boost his government’s performance and also accomodate the Golkar Party and PAN, which recently joined the ruling coalition.

The PDI-P warned the President on Wednesday that he had no reason to replace ministers from the party, such as Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly and Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, because they had shown good performances.

“Jokowi has no reason to cut our ministerial posts,” PDI-P politician Arteria Dahlan said on Wednesday.

State Secretary Pratikno said the public could do nothing but wait. “Let us wait [for the reshuffle],” Pratikno told reporters.

Jokowi promoted six new ministers to his Cabinet in August last year. He began his five-year presidential term in October 2014.
