Finnish national, who had been in detention in Bali for a year, was extradited to Australia on Wednesday.
Samuel Pekka Juhani Kuuppo, 32, had been sought by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for the alleged sexual abuse of his fiance.
Kuuppo fled to Bali to avoid trial in Australia last year. He had been charged with sexually abusing his fiance, also from Finland.
The AFP had asked for the arrest of Kuuppo, who was staying at the Gandi Home Stay in Denpasar. Bali Police arrested Kuuppo on May 7 last year at Ngurah Rai International Airport as he tried to leave Bali for Singapore.
Since the arrest Kuuppo had been in Bali Police custody and Kerobokan Penitentiary while awaiting the completion of the extradition process.
“We extradited a Finnish citizen wanted by Australia this morning. His name is Samuel Pekka Juhani Kuuppo. In 2015, he was arrested in Bali. He [allegedly] committed a crime in Australia,” Bali High Prosecutor Chief, Abdul Muni, told journalists after the extradition process.
Kuuppo had been taken from Kerobokan to the Bali Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday where the handover ceremony from the Indonesian authorities to the Australian authorities took place.
Representatives from the Australian embassy, the AFP and Australian prosecutors attended the meeting, as well as representatives from the Law and Human Rights Ministry, the immigration office and the Bali Police.
Kuuppo was then taken to Ngurah Rai airport under tight security by the Bali Police and the AFP. The AFP team also escorted Kuuppo while on the plane.
“He left Bali by Jetstar flight JQ 109 from Denpasar to Perth, under AFP escort,” Abdul Muni said.
