he Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry will expand the Marine Resources and Fisheries Monitoring Base (PSDKP) in Natuna Islands regency, Riau Islands, as part of efforts to suppress illegal fishing by foreign vessels in nearby waters.
The expansion is aimed at accommodating patrols boats measuring 60 meters long owned the PSDKP to be stationed at the Natuna base.
Batam monitoring station head Akhmadon told The Jakarta Post on Saturday the decision to expand the base was taken after a closed meeting with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo at the State Palace after his visit to Natuna.
“To heighten supervision and suppress illegal fishing by foreign fishing vessels in Natuna, the government decided to expand the Natuna’s PSDKP by expanding the port and increase the number of personnel assigned there,” said Akhmadon.
The Natuna base is now only able to accommodate four patrol boats measuring about 40 meters in length and with the expansion could accommodate two more patrol boats measuring 60 meters.
“Currently, the largest patrol boat can only dock at the Batam station. It will be stationed in Natuna because illegal fishing cases by foreign fishing vessels are mostly handled there,” said Akhmadon.
