Registration for the tax amnesty opened on Monday despite a judicial review motion being filed at the Constitutional Court by NGOs.

“Our colleagues in tax offices across the country have been working hard to prepare the [tax amnesty] services,” said Taxation Directorate General spokesman Hestu Yoga Saksama as reported by kompas.com on Monday.

He said the offices were required to open special desks to serve those applying for tax pardons.

Previously, Taxation Director General Ken Dwijugiasteadi said 60 percent of employees at each tax office had been assigned to work at the tax amnesty help desk.

He said while serving those who sought a tax pardon, the tax employees were not allowed to use communication devices, particularly when handling documents, to ensure the confidentiality of those seeking pardons.

Any officers/employees who leak taxpayer data could face five years in prison as stipulated in the Tax Amnesty Law.

The help desks will be manned until March 31, 2017 as stipulated in the law. “The special information system has been prepared online to make sure that the process of tax pardon services will not be disrupted,” Hestu added. (bbn)
