ational Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian has high hopes for newly-appointed National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Chief, Comr. Gen. Suhardi Alius.

Tito praised Suhardi for his managerial leadership skills, suggesting that he would adapt immediately to his new role leading counterterrorism measures in the country despite having no prior experience with either the BNPT or the National Police's anti-terror squad Densus 88.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated Suhardi as the new BNPT chief on Wednesday.

Tito suggested that Suhardi work to establish international cooperation and strengthen relations in the region, especially with Malaysia and the Philippines. BNPT network expansion is considered to be of importance amid current global terrorism threats, Tito added. A good network is required to effectively implement the agency's de-radicalization, rehabilitation and preventive action on terrorism and radicalism.

"I'm sure he will be able to build strong relationships with stakeholders," Tito said.

Suhardi served as chief secretary at the National Resilience Institute (Lemhanas) in 2015 and was chief of the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) from 2013 to 2015. (rin)
