fter heavy rains hit Jakarta and its upper areas, residences in the Pandok Pinang subdsitrict of South Jakarta were inundated from early Friday with water levels reaching between 50 to 150 centimeters.

Hundreds of houses were inundated.

“The water level started to increase at 4 a.m. and by 7 a.m., the water level had reached 120 centimeters. If the rain continues, the water level will increase again,” said Supri, a resident of the subdistrict Neighborhood Unit (RT) 16 as reported by beritajakarta.com on Friday.

He said the flooding was caused by the overflow of the Pesanggrahan River.

He said he and other residents had decided not need to leave their homes in the hope that the water would soon recede.

“We have started to take various goods to the second floor. We will wait for the water to recede at home or we will go to the neighbors, whose houses are constructed on a higher location,” said Supri.

Pondok Pinang subdistrict head Hendi Nopriyadi said the affected houses were located in RT units 10, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17.

“If the weather gets better, the water will recede soon, but we have prepared shelter places for the residents,” Hendi added. (bbn)
