ympathizers of terrorist Santoso are having a hard time accepting the death of the East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) leader, who they have dubbed an "Islamic hero", and have prevented authorities and journalists from approaching his home in Lantojaya village, South Sulawesi, an official confirmed on Friday.
"We are still committed to dealing firmly with anyone who breaks the law," Operation Tinombala task force spokesperson Adj. Sr. Comr. Hari Suprapto told The Jakarta Post on Friday evening in response to the actions of the sympathizers.
Poso Regent Darmin Sigilipu, together with Col. Inf. Saleh Mustafa and the Poso Inter-Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB) chair Abdul Ganil Israil, visited Santoso's family home to help the relatives move on after the fugitive was killed in a shootout with security personnel on Monday. "The regent also gave a donation to the family," Mustafa said.
Darmin said the family had accepted Santoso's death and would bury his body. There has yet to be word on the date and place of burial.
On the other hand, Operation Tinombala spokesperson Hari said the sympathizers had threatened to take possession of Santoso's body, which is at the Bhayangkara Hospital in Palu, Central Sulawesi, once it reached the area bordering Poso and Parigi Moutong if the body was to be buried in Lantojaya village. The group of sympathizers have prepared a procession to transport the body and a banner saying "Welcome Islamic Hero, Santoso, aka Abu Wardah", Hari added. (liz)
